Swine flu is sweeping the planet, and Doane’s taking preventative action.
On April 28, 64 cases of swine flu had been reported in the United States alone. Two of the cases were reported in Kansas.

Bobbie Fye, manager of custodial services, said Doane maintenance had put up hand sanitizers in most of the halls and by Tiger Inn to help prevent swine flu on campus.

Maintenance has also been using a disinfectant on everything they wipe down on campus, Fye said.

“The big thing is personal responsibility, doing everything to keep ourselves from being exposed,” Jirovec said.

This includes good hand washing, cover your cough, keeping your hands away from your face, nose and mouth, Jirovec said.

The CDC also recommends getting plenty of sleep, staying active, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids and eating healthy.

Jirovec said she was concerned about the swine flu because the virus was being spread from human to human, not just from animal to human.

“Anytime you start seeing spreading from human to human that’s always a concern,” Kelly Jirovec, director of student health services, said.

According to the center for disease control and prevention, swine flu spreads the same way as the seasonal flu, by contact with a person with influenza or by coming in contact with something with the virus on it.

Some of the symptoms of swine flu include:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
• Sudden dizziness
• Confusion
• Severe or persistent vomiting

Others symptoms are similar to normal influenza and include fevers, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue, according to the center for disease control and prevention.
