Fore senior Mark Steskal, golf is more than just a sport.
And lately, Steskal has been well over par. At the Union College Invite, Steskal’s 75-round earned him second place at the tournament, as well as the Great Plains Athletic Conference’s player-of-the-week.
“It was a surprise to me that I’d get GPAC of the week,” Steskal said. “Getting it my senior year was kind of fun.”
Steskal arrived on campus from Ewing, Neb. following in the footsteps of his older sisters, Jennifer (’01) and Carla (’03) Steskal.
“My older sister came here, and her younger sister decided to come here,” Steskal said. “She was a theatre major so growing up, I saw her shows.”
But Mark has definitely made his own way on campus.
In fact, Mark’s Tau Sigma Zeta brothers and golfing teammates use one word to describe him: fun.
“He’s a clown,” freshman and golfer Bo Cribelli said. “He’s got a great personality.”
It’s his personality that Mark thinks is his strength on the golf team.
And it’s gotten him through four years of Doane men’s golf, a challenge
that Mark has willingly taken up.
“It’s a lot more competitive than high school was,” Mark said. “You do have to try harder.”
Mark said he’d been playing since his hometown of Ewing, Neb. put in their golf course when he was seven years old.
Mark said he’d established friendships all over campus, primarily by living on campus for his entire Doane career.
“I like the social life here,” Mark said. “I’ve never considered living off campus.”
Part of Mark’s social life includes his activities with Tau Sigma Zeta.
“Mark is kind of a jack-of-all-trades,” senior Ross Hoppe said. “He’s always willing to help out or jump in when needed.”
Hoppe said Mark’s personality stood out to anyone who met him.
“Anyone who gets a chance to talk to Mark for 10 minutes will realize he’s the coolest guy you’ve gotten to meet,” Hoppe said.
In May, Mark will graduate with a business administration degree with a psychology minor, and plans to continue with his sport.
“I’ll golf for the rest of my life.”
