A picture may say a thousand words, but on Thursday, May 7, Doane students only need to remember three of them.

Hope. Prevent. Vaccinate.

For a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card, students can attend Hope.Prevent.Vaccinate., a presentation put together by four Doane students to raise awareness about Human Pampalomavirus (HPV), at 6:30 p.m. May 7 in the Perry Campus Center Great Hall.

Dr. Laura Hatch, a physician's assistant at the Saline Medical Specialties will be the featured speaker as she discusses the effects of the HPV virus and will educate students on its symptoms.

Students in professor Kathleen Zumpfe’s promotion’s class took on topics, such as HPV, to market and promote throughout campus. While students were responsible for choosing their topic and developing the buzz behind the product, student projects ranged from financial issues to baseball games.

Seniors Sara Thiry, Amber Remmers, Alyssa Ledon and junior Adrianna Choquette, started the HPV campaign as a way to make students more aware of it’s significance.

“I don’t think a lot of people knew that so many people are affected by HPV,” Thiry said, “and only two percent of Doane students knew exactly what the disease was.”

While HPV infects one in three people, most people are not aware they have the disease because there are no symptoms.

But the effects can be life altering.

“HPV can lead to different types of cancer,” Ledon said. “People just don’t realize how serious it is.”

HPV can lead to throat, mouth and cervical cancer, but a new Gardasil vaccine eliminates over 70 percent of the cancer causing HPV.

Thiry, Remmers Ledon and Choquette started the Hope.Prevent.Vaccinate campaign after researching HPV and discovered so few people knew about the disesase.

“Only a quarter of the Doane population even knew it was an STD (sexually transmitted disease),” Remmers said.

Students who attend the presentation will be eligible to win one of two $100 Visa gift cards and can be entered to win by paying attention to the upcoming Polaroid photo campaign.

Students can submit their questions and concerns about HPV by contacting a group member or posting their comments below this story.
