Junior Ashley Lidgett limped to accept the award for raising more than $1000 as Doane's Relay for Life came to a close Saturday morning.

Lidgett limped because she had promised to walk 100 laps over the course of the night for her teddybear and had done 60 laps around the Fuhrer Fieldhouse track in just two hours.

The teddybear was just one fundraiser that helped Doane raise $47,028 for the American Cancer Society, almost $15,000 less than previous years.

Doane’s Relay passed Nebraska Wesleyan's, a rival school’s, amount of $36,000, but did not reach Doane's goal of $60,000.

Though, as senior Bailey Haefer said, the Wesleyan rivalry did help to bring in additional funds.

“It really helped us to talk about Wesleyan because it got a lot of people competitive edge going,” Heafer said.

For over three years Ligett has been emailing friends and family annually to fundraise for her team. Lidgett’s team, Music Group Two, took home the second Annual Sweepstakes Award and also the Top Fundraising team award.

The sweepstakes prize is given to the team with the most points awarded through participation throughout the semester.

Lidgett said her mom, a teacher, was instrumental in raising the money.

"My mom helps out with the fundraiser at work," Lidgett said. "This year we raised $700 for jeans day."

Fundraising records were also set during Ms. Relay, a drag queen beauty contest, with two contestants raising more than $200, senior Blake Tobey said.

Although there was relativity the same amount of people as previous years and 46 teams participated, Heafer said Relay’s later date could be attributed to fewer tents being set up.

Still, for senior Kari Shanahan, she said it gave people all the more incentive to do better in the future.

"I'm a little disappointed," Shanahan said. "But, this gives a goal to work harder for next year."
