A woman’s voice rang harmonically through the coffee shop. Five, 10, 15 seconds her voice held, demanding silence and captivation by all others. Then a respectful pause followed by a roaring applause.

“There are three women who could do that song well,” said Rhonda Lake, theatre adjunct and judge for Doane’s Most Talented. “Barbara Streisand, Idina Menzel and Sammie Ware.”

Sammie Ware.

The girl who, at four years old, looked forward to singing at church on Sunday.

The girl, shy and nervous, but bursting with confidence once the music began.

The Owl talked to Sammie Ware following her winning performance on Friday night at the event.

Q: How did you develop your voice?
A: My voice is a gift from my Lord, but in order to treat it well, voice lessons and teachers from the past have helped me.

Q: Who are your biggest influences?
A: My biggest influences would be my family and education.

Q: What inspired you to choose the two particular songs?
A: "If I ain’t got you" is probably one of my most favorite songs; I connect with the song personally, and I love to share that lesson the song brings to everyone. "Rain on my Parade" was a spur of the moment thing due to my love for Barbra Streisand.

Q: What do you want the audience to feel when they listen to you sing?
A: I want the audience to listen to the words, both songs had a lot to do with what I would love to say to people in my life.

Q: Do you plan on auditioning for Glee? Any other auditions?
A: I actually just signed up for the update on when the auditions will take place for Glee, so hopefully I can get that ball rolling, it would most definitely be a dream come true, and I am waiting on a call from Worlds of Fun for summer performance work, so we will see about that!

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
A: In five years I see myself on stage with many other people who share the same and if not more talents than I, working to entertain, and teaching and working with children. My life will consist of lots of coffee, music, traveling and family.
